The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) was established in 1959 with a clear mission: to promote and advance the science and profession of engineering across all disciplines while fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among engineers. Today, IEM stands as one of Malaysia’s largest professional organizations, with approximately 30,000 members and a steady annual growth rate of 10%. Governed by a Council led by the President, its operations are managed by an Executive Committee and a full-time Secretariat, ensuring efficient administration and support for its members.
As IEM expanded, the need for stronger regional representation became evident, leading to the establishment of branches across Malaysia. One such establishment was in Melaka, where engineers were initially represented under the Southern Branch, which covered both Johor and Melaka. As the Melaka engineering community grew, the groundwork for the branch was initiated by Ir. Dato' Ooi Tiong Lee, Ir. Wee Kim Siang and other engineers in 1981. By 1983, approval was granted to establish the Melaka Region Sub Committee, entrusted with overseeing the welfare of engineers in Melaka, Muar, and Segamat Districts.
Recognizing the benefits of having a distinct identity, the IEM Melaka Branch was officially founded by Ir. Ooi Kah Huat on 20th January 1986, providing engineers in Melaka and Muar with a dedicated platform for collaboration and growth. Since then, the Melaka Branch has been running successfully for 39 years, guided by the strong leadership of its past chairmen. Their vision, commitment, and strategic efforts have not only sustained the branch but have also expanded its reach, strengthened professional development, and fostered lasting collaborations within the Melaka engineering community.
Through initiatives such as fundraising efforts, technical dialogues, and advocacy for industry advancements, IEM Melaka continues to make a meaningful impact, not only in engineering but also in shaping the future of the profession. Upholding IEM’s values, the Melaka Branch collaborates closely with other branches, including the Southern Branch, ensuring sustained growth and engagement within the engineering community.
The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia aims to be the premier learned engineering society championing the adoption of ethics and professional best practices in all sectors of the industry.
